Sports Illustrated Kids E-Card Creator & Cover Gallery

The Story

SIKIDS.COM, a Time, Inc. Publication, is the online counterpart to Sports Illustrated for Kids magazine. The site is very dynamic and changes frequently. SKIDS aim to create a fun, safe environment for kids, filled with some of the best sports oriented news, games, and interactive features on the internet.

SIKIDS' initial requirement revolved around their 20th anniversary issue for which they wanted a unique and cool interactive way t display their collection of classic magazine covers of the last 20 years. In addition, SIKIDS wanted the ability to sort, print and share covers in a simple and fun way. The major challenge was that given the time pressures of going to print with the anniversary issue, the lead time to delivery of the application was less than two weeks.

The Results

We utilized our cover flow gallery and created a cover zoomed viewer which provided all the functionality SIKIDS were seeking. We delivered a proof of concept within 48 hours of the first brief and the final application within 10 days - between Christmas and New Year, ready for launch on the agreed date.

In the process we were able to share the full power of the MashON Platform with the very talented SIKIDS production team who quickly identified numerous applications of the platform within the new SIKIDS site. We quickly started planning on other interactive applications to entertain the kids on their site. Over the last 18 months, we have deployed numerous interactive applications on SIKIDS.com including e-cards, comic strips, and a promotional campaign where kids could upload pictures of themselves and insert their faces into cartoon-style athletes and sports poses.

The speed of execution and flexibility of the platform has also meant that SIKIDS' sales team has been able generate additional revenues by offering the widgets and applications for sponsorship opportunities and to meet the needs of advertisers seeking to offer co-branded, immersive application to kids.
